Format: How-to / Step-by-step | Topic: Flexi rod technique
A flexi rod set is a heat-free styling technique that creates beautifully defined, bouncy curls on natural hair using flexible foam rods that are bent into shape to hold the hair. It is one of the most popular heat-free alternatives to a curling wand and produces results that are often more uniform and long-lasting than those achieved with direct heat. This comprehensive guide covers the process from product application to the final reveal.
What Are Flexi Rods?
Flexi rods are flexible foam rods with a wire core that can be bent into curved shapes to hold the hair in position while it dries. They come in a range of diameters — from very thin rods that produce tight ringlets to thicker rods that produce large, loose waves. The size of the rod you choose directly determines the size of the finished curl. For most natural hair types, medium-sized flexi rods produce a versatile, flattering curl that falls between a tight ringlet and a loose wave.
What You Will Need
Flexi rods in your chosen size, a leave-in conditioner, a styling mousse or setting lotion, a light oil, a rat tail comb, sectioning clips, and a hooded dryer or several hours for air drying. A mousse rather than a gel as the primary styling product tends to produce a softer, less crunchy result with flexi rods — the foam structure of mousse adds volume and hold without the stiff cast that gel sometimes creates on larger curl sizes.
Step 1 — Apply Products to Damp Hair
Begin on freshly washed, damp hair. Apply a leave-in conditioner throughout in sections, then follow with a mousse or setting lotion. The setting lotion or mousse helps the curl hold its shape as the hair dries on the rod and remains defined after the rod is removed. Distribute the product from roots to ends in each section before beginning to roll.
Step 2 — Roll Each Section Onto the Rod
Take a small to medium section of hair — no wider than the diameter of the flexi rod for the most even results. Starting from the ends, wind the hair around the rod smoothly, keeping the hair flat and crinkle-free as you wrap. Roll upward toward the root, maintaining consistent tension throughout the roll. When you reach the root, bend the rod ends toward each other to secure the roll in place. Repeat throughout the entire head.
Step 3 — Dry Completely
This step requires patience. The flexi rods must remain in place until the hair is one hundred percent dry. Partial drying will result in curls that fall out or revert within hours. Sit under a hooded dryer for one to two hours for the most efficient drying, or allow eight or more hours for a complete air dry. Check the roots — the last area to dry — before removing any rods.
Step 4 — Remove and Define
Unwind each rod gently in the opposite direction from the rolling motion, taking care not to disturb the curl shape. Apply a drop of oil to your fingertips and use your fingers to gently separate and fluff each curl from the bottom upward for volume and definition. Avoid combing or brushing, which will disrupt the curl pattern. The result should be a full, defined, bouncy set that lasts three to five days with satin nighttime protection.
